Square says that another mistake would “destroy” them.

According to IGN.com, the producer and director of Final Fantasy XIV told Kotaku that another flop like FF XIV would cripple the company.

Naoki Yoshida went on to say that he and his team know that the revision to the game, known as Final Fantasy XIV- A Realm Reborn, needs to find a success when released. He vowed that his team will not make the same mistakes that plagued the original version.

Yoshida mentioned that he feels like the team should’ve taken more from other MMORPG’s.

“”I think it would’ve been good if they tried seeing what happened if they turned World of Warcraft into Final Fantasy” he said.

To me this begs the question: does the high cost of developing video games, and the pressure for monetary success, hinder creativity and innovation?

It’s no secret that most action games look at Call of Duty with envious eyes, and many developers have seemingly tried to make their shooters play and look as much like Activision’s juggernaut as they can, but to see this trend go into other genres is a little sad.

The fact that there seems to be a success-or-bust mentality in some companies makes me fear that some great game ideas are being lost because may be too big of a risk.

What do you think? Is there a way that big name developers can create more risking games without fear of breaking the bank?

I think FF fans are loyal, and if Square went all out we would respond by purchasing the game. We appreciate out of the box thinking.

I agree that FF fans would be all over the game. I tentatively put my hat in the FF fan group (although I have only beaten three of the games) but I get the feeling that Square wants to get the mainstream audience with their new titles and my be relying on that too much. Let me ask you this, would you be willing to buy a more inventive, yet shorter and with lower production values, downloadable FF game for a cheaper price?

I think there needs to be a bit of a mix, like it wold be one thing to look at WoW to see what works and what doesn’t but then they would need to make it their own. It’s not so much they need to copy a successful MMO they just need to see why it worked and see if they can do that in their world I don’t see it as a bad thing but more of a fine line to tread. As for the FF series in general, if they put out another 16 bit F game I’d probably get it in a heart beat, the problem is Square lately has been changing what works in favor of flashier games personally I think they stopped being spectacular after X, once they started adding sequels it started going down hill a bit and this whole mess with the 13 “series” is worrisome to me. I think personally they are out of touch but Square has come back from worse, after all the original FF game is what saved the company in the first place, they just need to re-think their approach.

I agree with you. I would be all for a new 16 bit FF game that emphasis story and gameplay rather than the flash and nice graphics. I also think making it a downloadable game would go a long way in lowering cost.
